What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein used to relax dynamic wrinkles caused by the frequent movement of over active muscles in the face, resulting in a more relaxed, stress-free and youthful look. BOTOX® Cosmetic was approved by the FDA in 2002 for those unpleasant frown lines in between your brows, but has been used to treat various medical conditions for over 17 years. Botox can also be used to smooth crow’s feet around the eyes as well as lines across the forehead. This same treatment that makes you look younger and fresh can help relieve your pain as well. Botox can help reduce migraines and headaches, minimizes neck, back, and shoulder pain and muscles spasms, and excessive sweating.

What can I expect if I receive Botox at Skin Essentials?

BOTOX® consists of several tiny injections to the problem area and is administered by one of our physicians or cosmetic nurses. These injections alleviate the muscle activity responsible for your frown lines, relaxing them so that they are temporarily inactive. This is a minimally invasive procedure that has no down time and does not require anesthesia, although some prefer to numb the area before hand. BOTOX® is an office-based procedure that takes very little time to perform, and very little time for the patient to recover. The actual treatment takes about 10-15 minutes and is shown to last up to 4 months however, your own results may vary. You can expect to see the results within a few days and may continue to notice improvement for up to two weeks. Other than the initial redness and light swelling, you should not experience any other irritations.

At Skin Essentials, we often times use BOTOX® in conjunction with dermal fillers. This combination both relaxes the muscles and decreases the appearance of wrinkles, for a youthful, smoother, and healthier appearance. This non-invasive combination procedure has results that can last up to a year. As a prospective patient, what should I know about BOTOX®?

  • Side effects of BOTOX® are minimal, and can be expected to go away within a few days. These side effects may include a temporary sensation of tingling and minor swelling, as well as some numbness and tenderness in the treated area, as is to be expected from any medical injection. In order to reduce these effects, patients may wish to ice the treated area after the injection.
  • To prevent increased bruising, patients may also wish to refrain from taking antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, or aspirin before receiving BOTOX® injections for dermal fillers.
