The ideal look for men is the same today as it was when Michelangelo created his David. What has changed in the past few years is the number of men opting for plastic surgeries. With new procedures and technological advances that promise natural-looking results and less downtime, both men and women have increased confidence in the skills of their cosmetic surgeons. As well, men are continually looking for a healthier and fitter appearance, to give them increased confidence and enhanced success in both their business and social ventures.

Procedures for men require a different set of criterion than for women: the doctor must take into account factors such as skin thickness, beard growth, and body type. At bod:evolve, we know that the male aesthetic requires a different approach. Here are the services we offer for men:

Liposculpture

As men age, the body inevitably accumulates fat in certain areas. The abdomen, the flanks (or 'love handles'), the chin and neck, and even the breast area (with a condition called gynecomastia) are all likely problem areas that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Liposuction can, in many cases, effectively correct these problem areas. Liposuction surgery is especially effective for men, for several reasons. Men retain their skin elasticity for longer than women do, which means that the skin will tighten up more effectively after a liposuction procedure. As well, the areas of fat beneath the skin tend to be firmer and more vascular in men than in women.

In addition to liposuction, some men opt for a traditional excision procedure. This procedure is better known as surgical skin removal, and is used to remove loose, hanging skin. An excision can also be performed on gynecomastia patients, if the patient's breast enlargement is composed more of glandular tissue than fat.

Abdomen Reduction

An abdominoplasty, or a "tummy tuck", is an effective procedure for men who have hanging abdominal skin (which usually occurs after massive weight loss), loose abdominal muscles, or neglected hernias. An abdominoplasty removes excess fat, tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall, and trims the waistline. Incisions are made in the lower abdomen, and are well hidden.

If you have good skin elasticity and only a moderate amount of excess abdominal fat, you may benefit from liposuction alone. Your bod:evolve surgeon will let you know what proecedure would benefit you the most at your consultation.

Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Enlarged male breasts is a common condition, affecting 40-60% of men. The cause for gynecomastia is really unknown, although some studies have correlated the condition to various drugs or medical conditions.

Men who feel self-conscious about their appearance can be helped with breast reduction surgery. A breast reduction procedure removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts. As well, the procedure may be used to remove excess skin in the breast area. The result is a flatter, firmer, more contoured chest.

Facial/Neck Surgery

Men considering facial or neck surgery will have their entire head-face-neck region evaluated by one of our doctors. He will look to see if your hairline is receding, how full your sideburns are, and onto what areas of the face the beard-growing skin extends. He will also look for facial scars or sun-damaged skin, or loose or drooping neck skin.

Men may also be concerned about fatty or "jowly" areas beneath the chin. With younger patients, liposuction is many times enough to correct the problem. With older patients, a full facelift or necklift may be needed. These procedures include the tightening of the platysma muscles, which run down both sides of the neck. These muscles are thicker for men than they are for women, but this will not pose a greater challenge for your plastic surgeon.

It's obvious that male and female bodies are different. What is less known, however, is that male facial skin is different from its female counterpart. For example, the male facial skin has a richer blood supply than female facial skin. This means that male faces bleed more during surgery, and males can be at a greater risk for more bruising immediately following surgery.

Another matter for men that can differ from woman, is hair and beard growth. If you are a facelift patient with balding or thinning hair, surgical artistry may be necessary to hide the facelift incision. If hair-growing skin on your upper neck is shifted into a new location during surgery, you may need to shave this new location. Our office does offer laser hair removal if men would like a more permanent hair reduction procedure after surgery.

Your doctor will discuss all of your options with you during your consultation and review the discrete locations your incisions will be placed.

'Refinishing' Treatments for Facial Skin

After your facial surgical procedure with your bod:evolve surgeon you will be referred to our Skin Essentials department to incorporate a skin care regimen to help preserve your result. Our highly trained skin care team will recommend and design a personalized skin care plan that will include treatments and products. These treatments help to keep skin looking healthy, smooth and clean.

The Masculine Look: Facial Features for Men

Some procedures are fairly similar for men and women. Eyelid surgery, nose surgery, and facial-implant surgery are good examples. With these procedures, be sure to speak to your surgeon about what result you're looking for.
